U.S. Attorney Melissa Holyek is visiting senior centers across Utah, including the Uintah Basin, to warn against increasingly sophisticated imposter scams during Elder Abuse Awareness Month.
Preventing Elder Imposter Scams
The Department of Justice announced that Holyoak is conducting these visits to discuss how older Americans can avoid falling victim to scammers. In coordination with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, 2026, Holyoak reminded residents that government agencies will never call unexpectedly to demand money, request gift cards or cryptocurrency, or instruct individuals to move their funds.
Evolving Tactics Used by Scammers
Holyoak noted that as technology evolves, scammers use tactics designed to instill fear and urgency. She advised the public to stop and verify information with trusted individuals or official agencies rather than responding to phone calls, stating that her office will prosecute criminals to the fullest extent of the law.
Bison Seizure in Moffat County
In a separate recent development, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office executed an operation to seize approximately 90 bison from the Lay Valley Bison Ranch after determining the animals' welfare was in danger.
Details of the Animal Rescue
The seizure, conducted in cooperation with the Colorado Bureau of Animal Protection and the Colorado State Veterinary Office, followed a month-long effort by the sheriff's office to work with the ranch's elderly owner to address concerns regarding animal care. During the operation, authorities also seized one mule that required humane euthanasia due to suffering.
Animal Cruelty Charges Filed
The owner of the Moffat County ranch was charged this week with 91 counts of Cruelty to Animals.
