Lehi Police are offering a Ride-Along program that allows citizens to serve as official passengers in patrol vehicles. The initiative provides an opportunity for the community to observe the day-to-day operations of law enforcement firsthand.
According to the Lehi Police Department, the program is intended to help residents get to know their officers and educate the community on what to expect when requesting police assistance. It also serves as a way for individuals interested in law enforcement careers to examine the profession.
The program includes specific procedures and safety protocols for all participants. Ride-Along requests must be submitted at least 48 business hours before the intended date, and no person may participate until they have received approval and signed a completed waiver.
To ensure safety, observers will not accompany officers during prisoner transport or booking. Additionally, officers are prohibited from engaging in pursuit driving, responding to violent crimes in progress, or performing felony traffic stops while an observer is present unless the observer is first moved to a safe location.
Participants are permitted to ride between 8:00 am and 3:00 am, with a maximum duration of four hours unless a supervisor authorizes otherwise. The department also conducts record checks on potential candidates, and applicants must authorize a background investigation.
Participants are required to follow strict rules of conduct, which include wearing seat belts, maintaining neat and conservative attire, and remaining in the patrol car unless directed otherwise. The department prohibits the use of cameras, recording devices, or firearms, unless the participant is a certified active police officer from another Utah jurisdiction.
