Major construction projects at Causey and Pineview Reservoirs are forcing significant changes to road access and beach availability for Ogden Valley visitors throughout the 2026 and 20nt7 seasons. While both reservoirs remain open for recreation, travelers should expect one-lane traffic, closed boat ramps, and restricted access to several popular shoreline areas.
Causey Reservoir Traffic Disruptions
At Causey Reservoir, motorists traveling through the area should prepare for intermittent delays caused by ongoing infrastructure work. According to Visit Ogden, one-lane traffic controlled by flaggers is currently active on Causey Road, though at least one lane remains open for through traffic.
Specific road closures have also been implemented near the reservoir. Wheatgrass Road is scheduled to be fully closed from July 17, 2026, through May 15, 2027. Additionally, the Beaver Creek Bridge is expected to undergo a full closure for approximately three weeks this coming November. Visitors should also remain alert for potential parking lot closures at Skull Crack Road, which are still being determined.
Pineview Shoreline Reconstruction
The U.S. Forest Service is leading a large-scale reconstruction effort at Pineview Reservoir to improve safety and visitor access. As reported by Visit Ogden, the Port Boat Ramp, the Pineview Trailhead (also known as Windsurfer Beach), and surrounding areas on the western shore are fully closed through 2026, with no public access permitted during this time.
The project involves rebuilding several key sites, including a new road near the Pineview Trailhead and a brand-new day-use area dubbed 'New Point.' The Port Boat Ramp is being completely rebuilt to include new fee stations and a dedicated aquatic species inspection area. Improvements at the Pineview Trailhead will also feature new beach access routes, a new parking lot, updated restrooms, garbage services, picnic sites, and an information kiosk.
Available Pineview Access Points
Despite the closures at Pineview's western shore, several recreational areas remain accessible to the public. Pelican/Quist Beach is currently open, and vault restrooms are available at both the North Arm Trailhead and Pelican/Quist Beach. Other locations, including Cemetery Point, Anderson Cove, and Middle Inlet, continue to operate as usual, though fees may apply for certain access points.
The Forest Service is executing this infrastructure overhaul in collaboration with Weber County, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, and the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation.
Invasive Species Regulations
For those planning to launch watercraft at either reservoir, strict regulations regarding aquatic invasive species remain in effect. At Causey Reservoir, boaters and paddleboarders must complete a specific course to prevent the spread of mussels into Ogden Valley waters.
Similarly, at Pineview Reservoir, anyone launching any type of watercraft—including non-motorized vessels like kayaks and paddleboards—is required by Utah law to take an annual mussel-aware boater course. Furthermore, individuals operating motorized boats at Pineview must pay an annual aquatic invasive species program vessel enrollment fee.
Safety and Conduct Rules
Safety regulations regarding life jackets also differ slightly between the two locations. At Causey Reservoir, rangers may issue tickets for failure to wear a life vest, as they are required at all times. In contrast, rules at Pineview Reservoir require that life preservers be 'readily accessible' for all watercraft; for paddleboarders specifically, this means the jacket must be on the board if it is not being worn on the person.
Other notable regulations at Pineview include a ban on alcohol at all beach areas—though it is permitted on boats—as well as prohibitions on glass containers, littering, beach fires, and charcoal. Overnight camping is also prohibited at Pineview beaches, with the sole exception of the Anderson Cove campground.
Seasonal Recreation Outlook
While construction continues, both reservoirs offer seasonal recreation opportunities. Causey Reservoir remains a destination for fishing—noting that while free shafting is prohibited, underwater spearfishing is allowed from January 1 through December 31—and hiking. The annual Kokanee salmon run in September provides a notable seasonal event for the area.
Visitors to both locations are encouraged to plan for extra travel time on weekends and to monitor official updates via Weber County or the Ogden Ranger District, particularly regarding the fluctuating parking availability and road closures.
