Biotechnology is a growing field that connects science, innovation, research, and real-world solutions. At Southern Utah University (SUU), BioHive is creating a community where students can explore and learn about the opportunities in biotech, connect with other students and professionals, and develop skills that can help prepare them for careers in biotechnology and the life sciences.

"A real advantage of membership in the SUU BioHive Chapter is that it connects students to the larger parent organization," said SUU biology professor Dr. Tyson Edwards. "BioHive provides high-quality events at biotech companies across Utah, and scaffolds networking and career services for our students."

BioHive is a student-led organization open to students from a variety of STEM majors or backgrounds. Through networking, hands-on experiences, professional development, and exposure to biotechnology and life-science opportunities, the SUU chapter of BioHive aims to help SUU students turn their interests in science into meaningful experiences and future career opportunities.

Whether students are interested in biotechnology, biology, chemistry, environmental science, research, healthcare, or simply want to explore STEM career opportunities, BioHive provides a space to learn, connect, and get involved.

The organization is holding its next event, the SUU BioHive Bio-Hackathonon on Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. in Room 114 of the Science Building.

The Bio-Hackathon is a team-based competition where students collaborate to develop innovative solutions to real-world challenges in an assigned area of biotechnology. Teams will present their solutions to a panel of judges and be awarded based on creativity, impact, biotechnology, and teamwork. No prior biotechnology experience is required. Food and beverage will be provided.

Students interested in getting involved in BioHive or attending the Bio-Hackathon can follow @BIOHIVESUU or email tysonedwards@suu.edu to learn more and connect with the organization.
