Mayor’s Corner by Paul Penrod
Spring City had a successful Heritage Day at the end of
May, and as mayor, I express my gratitude to all who
worked so hard to make the day a pleasant one for the
many guests who came to town. Special thanks go to all
those who opened their homes for tours. It takes a lot of
preparation and sacrifice to do that, and we are grateful to
all of you.
Now summer is upon us and we have a special event to
look forward to in June. The inaugural Spring City Fa-
ther’s Day Weekend Car Show will be held on June 20
from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Spring City Park, 45 South
100 East. In addition to seeing cars of all types, families
can enjoy a variety of other activities. Awards will be giv-
en for various categories of cars. There will be raffle priz-
es in addition to a quilt raffle. Food trucks will be on
hand. Vendors of arts and crafts will be showing and sell-
ing their wares. For the children, there will be bounce
houses, face painting, and Hot Wheels races. To register
for the car show, contact recorder@springcityutah.gov or
call 435-462-2244.
Two public meetings will be held in June. One will be
held on June 17 at 7 pm in the City Hall. This meeting
will be jointly sponsored by the city government and
Horseshoe Irrigation Company, and it will help educate
the public about what plans have been made to deal with
the drought we are experiencing. There will be an oppor-
tunity to ask questions. The other meeting will be about
the city budget. No date has yet been established, but it
will be toward the end of June. Please watch for an an-
nouncement.
The city government wants to urge all citizens to be “fire
wise” on your properties. Now is a good time to get rid of
piles of old limbs or weeds or other things on your land
that can burn easily. With the drought and heat, July and
August will bring high fire danger. Likewise, we urge
those who like to go out walking or biking early in the
morning or after dark to carry a lamp or flashlight and/or
to wear reflective clothing so that you can easily be seen
by drivers and others who might otherwise not be aware
of you. Let’s all try to protect ourselves and each other.
Planning and Zoning Commission News
The Planning & Zoning Commission met May 27, 2026,
following a public hearing regarding the new city ordi-
nance 2026-06. The commission discussed this ordinance
and recommended approval of 2026-06. It will now be
sent to the City Council.
One license and permit was approved for an old barn
from out of state to be relocated and rebuilt on the north
end of Spring City. The Strate-Up Subdivision received
the final go-ahead to begin on the north end of town.
We discussed how electronic meetings could be held if all
of the commission members were not present, and our
recommendation will be sent to the City Council. A new
form for signage approval was submitted, but there are
still questions regarding signs, so the rules for putting up
signs were discussed.
The Council Liaison report was given by Michael Broad-
bent. Our Zoning Administrator thinks before we get a
new General Plan made for the city, we need to make
sure it reflects the specific needs of our unique city.
Spring City Community Doings by Jane Hawkes
Senior Dinner. The June senior dinner will be held
Wednesday, June 17, at 5:30 pm in the Old School Com-
munity Center ballroom. The menu will be sloppy joes,
pasta salad, fresh fruit salad, and ice cream sundaes for
dessert. The cost is $7/plate. Please RSVP to Jane at 707-
673-7548 by NOON Monday, June 15, so that she can let
the cook know how much to prepare. And sadly, this will
be Abby’s last meal for us! We will truly miss her creativ-
ity, her goodness, and her sunny smile! The entertainment
will be Ben Sherwood at the piano. There will be no sen-
ior dinner in July.
Birch Creek Service Ranch Youth. The youth of Birch
Creek Service Ranch are back. Many of us have been
helped in various ways in the past by these wonderful
young people. Call 707-673-7548 to get your name on a
list for their help during mornings in June and July doing
service such as yard work and clean-up, etc. These photos
from last year show you what enthusiastic young people
they are.
First Aid Learning Opportunities. On the last Thursday
of each month throughout the summer, there will be First
Aid classes at the old city hall in Spring City, 150 East on
Center street, at 7 pm. Area First Responder persons will
teach teens and older to learn helpful life-saving skills.
Since we do not have Scouts anymore, many young peo-
ple do not know First Aid. Come as families, youth
groups, or individuals and join us for the betterment of
our community. Call 707-673-7548 to sign up.
CERT Classes. If you would like to attend future CERT
(Community Emergency Response Team) classes, please

The Canal Creek Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers
would like to thank all those in the community who con-
tributed to our bake sale on Heritage Day. It is greatly ap-
preciated. This sale gives us the means to function as a
camp during the year and to keep up maintenance and im-
provements in our museums.
We have three museums in Spring City: the Old City
Hall, the Old Jail and the Museum room in the 1899 Old
School. We are grateful for the docents who so willingly
contribute their time so that the museums on Main Street
can be open several days during the week. The Old
School Museum is open when the doors of City Hall are
open. As an organization, the DUP promotes historical
preservation and community heritage.
The North Sanpete Company June Jubilee will be held
Funk’s Lake Legacy Project
In last month’s edition of the Spring Town Times, an arti-
cle about Funk’s Lake, now called Palisade Park, was in-
cluded. The article described efforts to construct a memo-
rial at the state park to honor Daniel Buckley Funk, an
early pioneer and the architect and builder of the lake.
If you would like to participate in funding a permanent
legacy plaque and gazebo at Palisade Park to honor Mr.
Funk, there are three ways you can do this:
(1) Venmo a contribution to @DBFunk –Memorial. In-
clude a note saying “Legacy Project Fund for Daniel
Buckley Funk.”
in Wales, hosted by the Coal Bed Camp. Camp members
are invited to attend Monday, June 8, at 11:00 a.m. at the
Sanpitch Ward Building, located at 92 S. 200 W. Please
inform Carla Nelson if you plan to be there. The June Ju-
bilee is held to honor the arrival of Brigham Young’s
wagon into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, which is the
founding of the Utah Territory. The Jubilee is held in
June to celebrate Brigham Young’s birthday and to re-
member all of our pioneers.
The Old School museum displays an 1897 photo of the
50th anniversary Jubilee, where over 250 surviving pio-
neers posed for the photograph. Most of the pioneers in
the photo have been identified. At the time, it was said
that a photo of so many people could not be done; howev-
er, this photographer said he could do it!

This is also a reminder that a Community Legacy Event

tend. All donors will be recognized at the tribute event for
Daniel Buckley Funk.
