rPlus Energies announced the successful start of commercial operations for the Green River Energy Center, located in Emery County, Utah. The facility features 400 megawatts of solar power and a 400 MW/1,600 megawatt-hour battery energy storage project.
Project scale and location
As the largest solar and storage facility within the six-state service territory of PacifiCorp, the center highlights Utah's role in meeting increasing energy needs in the West.
Alignment with state energy goals
The project aligns with Operation Gigawatt, an initiative announced by Utah Governor Spencer Cox in 2024 to double the state's energy production over the next decade. Governor Cox stated that the Green River Energy Center represents the large-scale energy investment required to deliver reliable energy and support rural Utah.
Support for infrastructure and workers
US Senator John Curtis noted that the project is an example of an all-of-the-above approach to meeting growing energy needs, stating that the investment strengthens energy infrastructure and supports Utah workers and communities.
Economic impact and local benefits
Economically, the Green River Energy Center is expected to generate more than $55 million in property taxes for public services and schools. During its construction phase, the project employed hundreds of workers and utilized several local contractors. Additionally, project partners committed $375,000 in scholarships for local students to help strengthen the regional workforce.
Commissioning ceremony and community donations
A commissioning ceremony was held on Monday, June 22, attended by Governor Spencer Cox, community members, and project partners. During this event, partners announced a $45,000 donation to the Ferron Fire Department to support local emergency response services.
Industry awards and recognition
The Green River Energy Center has received several honors, including being named the Renewables Deal of the Year – Americas by Project Finance International and receiving the 2024 Energy Company of the Year award from the Emery County Business Chamber.
