A Flash Flood Warning was extended for southeastern Washington County in southwestern Utah, according to a National Weather Service Salt Lake City bulletin. Emergency management reported that thunderstorms were producing heavy rain in Springdale, with rainfall amounts between 0.75 and 1.25 inches recorded.
Flash flooding was observed occurring in the area. UDOT cameras showed flooding along the Virgin River crossing roads, primarily SR-9. The North Fork Virgin River gauge near Springdale spiked, indicating a potential flood wave progressing down the river. This could result in flood waters crossing SR-9 further downstream within a 1-2 hour window.
Locations identified as being subject to flash flooding include Hurricane, La Verkin, Apple Valley, Virgin, Springdale, and Rockville. The threat involves life-threatening flash flooding of creeks, streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses. Officials advised that most flood deaths occur in vehicles and cautioned people to turn around rather than driving through flooded roads.
The National Weather Service indicated the threat of considerable flash flood damage.
