A 13-year-old runner from Burley, Idaho, has regained the ability to breathe deeply following a corrective surgery for pectus excavatum. Benjamin Welker, an active student who enjoys running, hiking, and playing musical instruments, underwent the NUSS procedure at University of Utah Health after experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath.
Diagnosis and symptoms
The Welker family first noticed an indentation in Benjamin's chest several years ago. While they were not initially concerned, symptoms including sharp pains near the lungs and difficulty breathing eventually led to a diagnosis of pectus excavatum. Following tests at a regional hospital in Idaho, imaging revealed a Haller index of 4.25, which is considered severe as it exceeds the 3.25 threshold.
Seeking specialized surgical care
Seeking specialized care, the family traveled to Salt Lake City to meet with Robert A. Swendiman, MD, at University of Utah Health. Dr. Swendiman noted that Benjamin was symptomatic and qualified for the NUSS procedure, which involves placing titanium bars inside the chest wall to reshape the chest. These bars are typically kept in place for three to four years.
Successful recovery and racing
Benjamin underwent surgery on December 6, 2024. Since the procedure, his mother, Mackenzie, described a night and day difference in his health and ability to participate in physical activities. By Thanksgiving 2025, Benjamin completed a 5K race with a personal best time and without any pain. He continues to check in with Dr. Swendiman annually until the bars are removed.
