The revitalization of Liberty Park’s Rotary Play Park is progressing as part of the Reimagine Neighborhood Parks General Obligation bond project. Utilizing $2 million from funding approved in November 2022, the initiative seeks to transform the well-loved park into a space that increases community demand and utilization.
The project follows extensive public engagement phases where residents provided input on desired features for the playground area.
During the initial round of public input in the summer of 2023, organizers surveyed hundreds of people and met with families and Community Councils. Feedback indicated a strong preference for a playground accessible to children of all ages and abilities, featuring elements such as obstacle courses, imaginative play structures, shade structures, drinking fountains, and improved sightlines.
Following this feedback, three design concepts were developed in early 2024. After further input gathered in May, a final design concept was established. This final vision incorporates community preferences for clearer sightlines, more shade, better seating, and desired activities.
The project is currently in the Project Design & Document Review phase. While construction is scheduled to run from September 2, 2025, through the end of summer 2026, the Rotary Play Park will be closed.
During the construction period, alternative playground options remain available in Salt Lake City, including the Rice Pavilion Playground located in the northeast corner of Liberty Park, as well as nearby locations such as Herman Franks Park, Richmond Park, and Ida M. Cotten Park.
The completed project is expected to feature new amenities that celebrate the community it serves. Renderings of the final concept include a play tower with accessible structures and a summer splash pad equipped with misting and shade features.
