Rob Cuff retired as the Executive Director of the Utah High School Activities Association on July 31, 2026, concluding a 25-year career with the organization. Cuff, who served as the association's sixth Executive Director for 17 years, leaves behind a significantly expanded athletic landscape for Utah student-athletes.
A Legacy of Expansion
Cuff's tenure at the UHSAA was marked by significant growth in both membership and competitive opportunities. During his time leading the association, the number of member schools grew from 122 with 85,000 participants to 160 schools with more than 113,000 participants. He also oversaw the addition of several new sports, including girls' golf, boys' lacrosse, girls' lacrosse, girls' wrestling, boys' volleyball, competitive cheer, and esports.
Leadership Through Transition
The UHSAA Executive Director also navigated the association through the COVID-19 pandemic, a period described as one of the most dynamic in the organization's history. Under his leadership, the UHSAA became the first state association in the nation to hold high school football games during the fall of 2020. Cuff also initiated the "Raise the Bar" Statewide Sportsmanship Program to promote responsibility among student-athletes.
Coaching and Early Career
Before joining the UHSAA staff in 2001 as an Assistant Director, Cuff served as an English teacher and head boys' basketball coach at Mountain View High School in Orem. During his seven years coaching the Bruins, he recorded a 126-44 coaching record and led the team to two state championships. His coaching tenure included seven consecutive top-five finishes and a 23-5 record in state tournament games.
Regional Classifications
The UHSAA continues to manage complex regional classifications for various sports. For the 2025-27 alignment, the 6A classification includes several regions, such as Region 1 consisting of Davis, Farmington, Layton, Syracuse, and Weber, and Region 3 featuring American Fork, Corner Canyon, Lehi, Lone Peak, and Skyridge.
Tournament Schedules
The association also manages seasonal championship schedules for baseball and softball. For baseball, the 6A bracket play is scheduled for May 24-27, with finals occurring on May 28 and 29. Softball's 6A bracket play is scheduled for May 25-26, with a best-of-three final on May 27 and 28.
Future Outlook
As the UHSAA moves forward, the organization has named J. Ryan Bishop as the seventh Executive Director to succeed Cuff. The association continues to partner with MaxPreps for official statistics and rankings across all classifications.
