Utah Tech head football coach Lance Anderson noted that the Trailblazers were showing increased athleticism and physicality during the third day of summer camp. Entering his third season, Anderson stated that the team was executing at a higher level as they prepare for their upcoming season.
The Trailblazers are preparing to compete in the Big Sky Conference, a premier FCS football conference that includes in-state opponents Weber State and Southern Utah. Preseason polls predicted Utah Tech would finish 13th in the conference. Defending FCS National Champion Montana State was projected to win the league, followed by Montana and UC Davis.
Anderson discussed the depth of the roster, noting that while some strong players were lost to the transfer portal, the team has gained significant depth in key areas. He highlighted the cornerback position as a strength, mentioning Brevin Czosnyka, Quincy Lejay, River Moore, and Jeremiah Jimoe. He also noted a strong group of running backs, including Ace Chatman, Junior Curtis, and Kona Crowell.
A significant competition is currently unfolding for the starting quarterback position. Three candidates are vying for the role: junior Bronson Barben, junior CJ Tiller, and fifth-year senior Deacon Hill. Anderson noted that all three are talented, with Barben having significant experience from last season, Hill having started two years ago prior to an injury, and Tiller having played for Boise State and Utah State.
Utah Tech is scheduled to make its Big Sky debut on Aug. 31 against Montana State at Greater Zion Stadium in St. George. Anderson expressed that the matchup would serve as a significant measurement of the team's progress against one of the best programs in the league.
