By Mayor Tish Buroker
November 1, 2026
In this month of gratitude and thanksgiving, it is fitting to thank you all for the opportunity to serve OUR community.
Many residents have asked me what the most surprising aspect of serving as Mayor is. Of course, there is not just one simple answer. However, one of the most important is regarding the structure of a city, and the impact a mayor can make. For example, I mentioned to staff that 2026 was an important year, the semiquincentennial, and they immediately rallied behind that idea. A challenge coin was forged celebrating this important milestone. Large banners were placed on City Hall, banners were hung along the streets, and the Fourth of July included a special presentation of the play, “1776”. Several contests were held, with hundreds of people participating in our Passport to Freedom challenge.
The Dome featured a “Road to Liberty” exhibit which was well attended. I had the wonderful opportunity to provide copies of David McCullough’s book “1776” to over 100 residents and met with many of you to learn your impressions and insights.
There are always challenges. One of the key challenges we have faced this year has been coping with drought conditions. Many newsletter articles have focused on this issue, and I appreciate the generally positive response from residents as you reduced your water consumption.
Of course, there are economic challenges with demand for services beginning to exceed revenue. There is much work left to be done. But the workload has been made lighter with the great city staff and residents that work and live here in Riverton. I am looking forward to 2027.
