Early life and education
Huntsman passed away this week at age 88. She originally came to study at the University of Utah in 1956, where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority.
Philanthropic legacy and cancer research
Alongside her husband, Jon Huntsman, Karen helped establish significant philanthropic legacies. In 1995, the family donated $100 million to create the Huntsman Cancer Institute. The institute has since been noted for discovering more genes for inherited cancers than any other cancer center globally.
Mental health and foundation leadership
In 2019, the family committed $150 million to establish the Huntsman Mental Health Institute, which provides resources for students, employees, and rural communities. Following the death of Jon Huntsman in 2018, Karen directed the work of the Huntsman Foundation while navigating her own battle with ovarian cancer.
Family tributes to her character
Family members described Huntsman as a woman of strength and determination. Her son, Jon M. Huntsman Jr., referred to her as the chief operating officer of their large family, which includes nine children.

The University of Utah honored Huntsman's commitment to the state in 2022 when she received an honorary degree. Bob Carter, executive vice president for health sciences and CEO of University of Utah Health, noted that her impact extends across the university through investments in research and the establishment of the 12 Jon M. Huntsman Presidential Chairs.
