Deion Sanders announced that Isaac Wilson will start at quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes this Saturday night when No. 11 Utah visits Folsom Field. The announcement came during a Tuesday press conference, according to a October 13 report by Denver Sports.
Sanders addressed the quarterback position following a 29-7 loss to Texas Tech, a game in which Wilson threw three interceptions, including a pick-six from his own end zone. Sanders described Wilson as a fighter who is not getting down on himself despite the performance. The coach also noted a desire to reduce the team's passing volume, stating he wants to keep attempts between 17 and 24 rather than the 44 attempts seen against Texas Tech.
The upcoming matchup features Wilson facing his former team, having played nine games for the Utes before transferring to Boulder. The Buffaloes enter the game with a 2-3 record and 0-2 in the Big 12. Sanders described Utah as likely the best team Colorado will face this season, noting that Utah possesses the nation's No. 9 run defense with 2.86 yards allowed per carry.
The decision to stick with Wilson ends speculation involving freshman Kaneal Sweetwyne, who recently changed jersey numbers. While Sanders noted that Sweetwyne can run and throw, and former starter Julian JuJu Lewis can throw well, neither is expected to play the position this weekend. The game coincides with family weekend in Boulder.
Sanders joked with Wilson before a recent meeting, telling him to make sure he throws the ball to the players on the team, though he clarified the comment was a joke.
