Despite an early-season blowout by the Spartans, 48-16, the Bulldogs nearly pulled off the upset against Emery, but late-game heroics from the Spartans elevated the team to a 28-21 opening-round win. Quarterback Ajay Thomas started the scoring in the contest, finding the end zone on a 12-yard scamper to put Emery up early.
