Alpine School District is scheduled to dissolve on June 30, 2027, according to a report published August 14. The district, which serves more than 80,000 students across roughly 90 schools, will be replaced on July 1, 2027, by three successor districts: Aspen Peaks, Lake Mountain, and Timpanogos.
The division follows the passage of Propositions 11 and 14 in November 2024, which received approximately 60 percent support. Proposition 11 established the Aspen Peaks School District, covering Alpine, American Fork, Cedar Hills, Highland, Lehi, and the Utah County portion of Draper. Proposition 14 created the Lake Mountain School District for Eagle Mountain, Saratoga Springs, Fairfield, and Cedar Fort. The remaining cities—Orem, Lindon, Pleasant Grove, and Vineyard—will form the Timpanogos School District by subtraction.
While the split is finalized, the 2026-27 school year will continue to run entirely under Alpine School District. This includes responsibility for the school calendar, teacher employment, transportation, and student services. The new districts will not begin operations until the 2027-28 school year.
Under legislation passed in SB188, specific protections were established for employees. Staff members assigned to a school on the allocation date will remain at that school and become employees of the new district. These employees will retain their tenure and career status, and salaries will not decrease during the first year. However, central-office administrators and district-level directors only have a right to a contract with a new district, rather than a guarantee of their current specific job.
Asset allocation remains a complex process involving the negotiation of bus fleets, maintenance equipment, technology contracts, and fund balances. While buildings will be assigned based on geography, the three boards are working through joint committees to manage the split of resources. The Legislature has also provided startup funding, reported at $10 million per new district, for capital and special projects.
Tax rates for the new districts have not yet been decided and will be set by each individual board through the Truth in Taxation process. Residents are cautioned that school assignment may change in the future due to boundary studies currently being conducted by all three new districts.
