During the response to a domestic dispute, an officer was speaking with a resident when a man exited the home with a gun and opened fire, mortally wounding the officer. An arriving backup officer was also shot and killed.
A deputy and a K9 from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being shot while inside their patrol vehicle.
As more officers arrived at the scene, bystanders helped convince the man to surrender. The suspect is in custody and has been charged with aggravated murder.
Officer Estrada had been with the Tremonton-Garland Police Department for less than a year. His previous experience includes service with the North Park Police Department, Box Elder County Sheriff's Office, and Logan City Police Department. He is survived by his wife and two children.
