Smith Entertainment Group and Intermountain Health announced a partnership to develop a state-of-the-art sports medicine center at a new sports campus in Sandy, Utah. The nearly 60,000-square-foot Intermountain Health Sports Performance Center is scheduled to open in 2028 adjacent to the Utah Jazz and Utah Mammoth practice facilities.
Integrated Healthcare Partnership
The new performance center will be integrated into a larger sports campus development on the site of The Shops at South Town. According to Smith Entertainment Group, the campus will be the only location in the NBA and NHL featuring two teams under a single ownership group and a single healthcare provider.
As part of the agreement, Intermountain Health became the official healthcare partner for both the Utah Jazz and the Utah Mammoth on July 1, 2026. Additionally, Select Health will serve as the exclusive health insurance provider for both professional franchises.
Advanced Medical Services
The medical center will provide a variety of clinical services, including primary care, orthopedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and an orthopedic ambulatory surgery center. The facility is expected to utilize AI-enabled performance insights and advanced diagnostics to assist with injury prevention and recovery protocols.
Ryan Smith, chairman and CEO of Smith Entertainment Group, said the partnership allows the organization to share best practices and invest in proactive care for both professional athletes and the local community. Rob Allen, president and CEO of Intermountain Health, noted that the sports medicine teams will work alongside the Jazz and Mammoth organizations to provide connected care.
Development of South Town
The development of the sports campus is part of a long-term transformation of The Shops at South Town. Smith Entertainment Group originally acquired the 111-acre site in its entirety on August 1, 2024.
The acquisition included the shopping center, surrounding parking lots, and adjacent retail, restaurant, and hospitality buildings located between Interstate 15, 10000 South, State Street, and 10600 South. At the time of the purchase, SEG project lead Jim Olson described the acquisition as a step toward expanding the company's real estate footprint and public benefit offerings in Utah.
Future Site Plans
The 111-acre property is also slated to host the permanent practice and training facility for the Utah Hockey Club. That facility, which was scheduled for completion in 20\% of the total property development planned for the area.
While the sports performance center is a major component of the site's evolution, Smith Entertainment Group noted that its recent announcements represent only roughly 10 percent of the total property development planned for the area.
Community Impact
The sports campus is positioned near the base of the Wasatch Mountains, providing proximity to several major skiing destinations. The integrated design aims to serve professional athletes, youth competitors, and active community members through a combination of clinical care and performance science.
