Sageland Collaborative and Trout Unlimited scheduled a volunteer event to build beaver dam analogs and other low-tech restoration structures at Lodgepole Creek. The project is intended to improve stream habitat in the area near Coalville, Utah.
The event was scheduled for Thursday, October 8, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants can expect to walk up to two miles over uneven surfaces, which may include wading in streams. Tasks involve carrying materials such as branches, rocks, mud, and fence posts, as well as using hand tools like hammers, shovels, loppers, and clippers.
The project site is approximately a one-hour drive from the Salt Lake City area. Organizers noted that there is no cell phone service, potable water, or restroom facilities available at the site. Sageland Collaborative will provide tools, instruction, extra water, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, and a first aid kit. Safety equipment and muck boots or waders in various sizes, ranging from women's size 5 to men's size 13, will also be provided.
All ages are welcome to participate, though the projects are not suited for children under 10 years old. Volunteers under 18 require a guardian's signature, and those under 15 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Because space is limited, attendance is restricted to 30 guests, and each attendee must RSVP separately. Participants are required to complete a Sageland Collaborative Volunteer Liability Form and Waiver.
Interested individuals can RSVP to register for the event. For more information, the organization directs inquiries to their FAQ page or to Shane.
