The Utah Department of Transportation announced Thursday that the ramp from eastbound I-80 to southbound I-215 remains closed as part of an ongoing reconstruction project on I-215 West. The closure, which began July 13, is expected to continue until mid-August.
Ongoing Traffic Impacts
The ramp closure is part of a larger rehabilitation effort stretching from SR-201 to North Temple. According to UDOT, the project includes roadway reconstruction and resurfacing, the rehabilitation of 30 bridges, and pavement reconstruction on 14 miles of ramps along I-80 and California Avenue.
In addition to the eastbound I-80 to southbound I-215 closure, several other traffic impacts are currently in effect. The westbound I-80 to northbound I-215 ramp was scheduled to close through July 20, while nightly lane restrictions on I-80 were expected to continue each night from 9 p.m. through the early morning hours throughout the week of July 13.
Upcoming Schedule Disruptions
Commuters should prepare for further disruptions scheduled to begin later this month. As early as July 28, UDOT anticipates a 30-day closure for the northbound I-215 to westbound I-80 ramp, the northbound I-215 to eastbound I-80 ramp, and the northbound I-215 to Redwood Road ramp.
Furthermore, a full closure of North Temple from Redwood Road to 2200 West was scheduled to begin as early as Friday, July 17 at 8 p.m., lasting through the early morning hours of Monday, July 20 for bridge construction.
Local Street Restrictions
The I-215 and I-80 interchange area is a primary focus of the work, with 11 bridges in that specific zone requiring improvements. To ensure a safe construction zone and efficient duration, ramps in this area will face intermittent closures through August 2026.
Local street traffic may also experience shifts or restrictions near bridge rehabilitation sites. Drivers should expect intermittent lane shifts and restrictions on 500 South, Indiana Avenue, California Avenue, and 1700 South.
Project Timeline and Expectations
The I-215 West improvement project is expected to continue through summer 2027. UDOT warns that construction schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions and the availability of materials.
Motorists traveling through the area should anticipate reduced speeds, noise, dust, and vibration from heavy equipment and crew members in the construction zone.
