Highland City is offering free sand and sandbags to residents concerned about flooding caused by the remnants of Hurricane Rachel, according to an Oct. 15 report. The initiative aims to assist neighborhoods that face potential flood risk following rain brought to the Wasatch Front by the storm system.
The city announced the program via a post on X on Tuesday, Oct. 13. In the post, officials acknowledged that some Highland neighborhoods face potential flood risk but also expressed gratitude for the much-needed rain following previous drought conditions.
Residents seeking sand or sandbags can call 801-772-4515 during business hours. For assistance after hours, the number is 801-420-2553. Individuals who spot flooding in Highland can report it using either the business hours number or the after-hours emergency number.
Highland City Hall is located at 5400 W. Civic Center Drive, Suite 1. The office is open Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed on Fridays. The city's general phone number is 801-756-5751.
The sandbag program follows similar regional efforts. On Oct. 9, ABC4 reported that cities across the Wasatch Front were making sandbags available as Hurricane Rachel's remnants approached. The ABC4 weather team had forecast 1 to 3 inches of precipitation, with the heaviest rain expected along and northwest of the storm.
Other nearby cities established distribution points: Eagle Mountain directed residents to an emergency utilities hotline, Pleasant Grove offered pre-filled bags at a public works site, and Lindon provided sand for residents to fill their own bags.
