The initiative is part of a larger mission by the organization to foster self-empowerment for Black and African communities living west of Salt Lake City.
Economic Empowerment Mission
The Pan African Westside Salt Lake Co-op, also known as PAWSLC, Inc., aims to provide New Americans with real-life scenarios to improve financial literacy. According to the organization, these classes are tailored specifically to the needs of refugee and immigrant communities to help them navigate complex economic environments.
Four-Phase Development Plan
The cooperative's long-term strategy involves a four-phase plan for the growing population of African refugees, immigrants, Afro-Caribbeans, and Black Americans in the Salt Lake metro area. The organization's goals include teaching community classes, managing diverse caseloads across different languages, providing low-income housing, and eventually establishing a multicultural center.
Municipal Support Services
Complementing these community efforts, the Salt Lake City Mayor's Office of Access & Belonging provides a comprehensive resource guide for immigrants and refugees. The guide offers information on legal help, healthcare, housing assistance, food, and emergency support.
Language Access Initiatives
To ensure equitable access to city programs, Salt Lake City maintains a Language Access Policy that provides free interpreter services for residents with limited English proficiency. The city also offers a 'Good Neighbor Guide' available in several languages, including Spanish, Somali, Swahili, Burmese, and Karen.
Community Integration Programs
Other local integration efforts include the Know Your Neighbor (KYN) program, a partnership between the Mayor's Office of Access & Belonging and the State Refugee Services Office that connects volunteers with refugees in Utah. Additionally, the city's Arts, Culture, & Entertainment (ACE) Fund provides grants for community events that celebrate local culture.
