Provo City’s Parks and Recreation and Public Works departments will begin a major project to improve the Provo River Trail while replacing aging water and sewer infrastructure near Columbia Lane. The work is scheduled to begin November 2, 2026.
The project includes several improvements intended to increase safety and accessibility along the Provo River Trail. Plans involve widening the trail to 14 feet underneath the State Street and Columbia Lane bridges. Additionally, crews will improve grades, head clearance, and sight lines while working to eliminate sharp turns. The project also includes the construction of a new pedestrian bridge located north of the Macey’s parking lot and east of State Street.
Utility replacement is a central component of the upcoming work. Crews will replace approximately 615 feet of 24-inch sewer pipe and 300 feet of 16-inch water line located underneath the Provo River. By performing these utility replacements alongside the trail improvements, the city intends to reduce the overall duration of construction and minimize long-term community impacts.
Construction will result in specific closures and travel changes. Columbia Lane is scheduled to close from November 2, 2026, through mid-May 2027. The River Trail will be closed from November 2, 2026, through July 31, 2027. While access to properties and nearby businesses will remain available, visitors may need to use alternate routes and should watch for construction signs and traffic-control devices.
The city requests patience and cooperation from the community while this work is underway.
