BYU football landed at No. 8 in The Associated Press Top 25 and No. 9 in the US LBM Coaches Poll on Sunday, according to a report published October 25. This follows a double-overtime road loss to UCF on Saturday, which resulted in the team falling from its previously unbeaten status.
The Cougars dropped six spots in both national polls after suffering a 39-31 double-overtime setback at UCF. Prior to the loss, BYU held the No. 2 spot in the AP poll and No. 3 in the AFCA poll following a 28-24 victory over No. 2 Notre Dame.
BYU enters its sixth consecutive week ranked in the top 10 this season. The team holds a 6-1 record and a 3-1 record in the Big 12.
The Big 12 has six teams ranked in the AP Top 25 this week, marking the highest number of ranked conference teams since 2012. In addition to BYU and Utah, who are both in the top 10, the ranked conference teams include Texas Tech, Houston, Arizona, and Oklahoma State.
In the national polls, Miami holds the top spot. Other consensus top four teams include Ohio State, Georgia, and Indiana. While the AP ranked BYU at No. 8, the AFCA placed the Cougars at No. 9.
BYU entered the 2026 season with preseason rankings of No. 15 by the coaches and a tie at No. 14 with USC by AP voters. This marked the second-highest preseason AP ranking in program history, following a No. 10 ranking in 1985.
Historically, the program has been ranked 313 times in the AP poll since its first national ranking in 1974. The Cougars have maintained a 44-12 record when playing as an AP Top 25 team.
