Construction of the new West High School reached a visible milestone this week as crews raised the first concrete wall panels on the northwest corner of the building.
Following several months of excavating and pouring footings and foundations, the project has moved into the next stage involving tilt-up wall panels.
Crews are currently building the wall panels on-site using casting beds rather than transporting pre-poured sections from off-site. This method serves as a cost-saving measure to help keep the construction project within budget.
Phase One of the development includes the field house, academic tower, and the main school building. This phase is expected to be completed in 2030, at which time students will move into the new facility.
Once Phase One is complete, Phase Two will begin with the rebuilding of athletic facilities on the west side of 300 West. While crews will demolish the existing building, efforts will be made to preserve the school's iconic clock tower.
If the clock tower is found to be structurally sound, it will remain and serve as the entrance for the new athletic fields. Additional elements from the original building will also be preserved and incorporated into the new school to honor its history as the oldest high school in Utah.
