Yellowstone National Park is implementing temporary closures on trails and fishing areas near Old Faithful following a bear attack that resulted in the hospitalization of two hikers. The incident has prompted the park to continue its investigation into the incident.
The hikers, aged 15 and 28, were provided with life-saving aid on scene before being airlifted for further medical care. According to the National Park Service, a female grizzly bear with two or three cubs-of-the-year was involved in the encounter, with the cubs being in their first year of life. The park has closed areas west of the Grand Loop Road from the north end of Fountain Flat Drive to Black Sand Basin, including trails such as Sentinel Meadows, Imperial Meadows, Fairy Creek, and Summit Lake, as well as several campsites and certain fishing areas on the Firehole River. Areas like the Midway Geyser Basin and the Black Sand Basin remain open. Visitors are advised to follow all posted closures and exercise caution when in the park.
