A delegation from Utah Valley University visited the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University–Mid La Union Campus on June 27, 2026, to conduct an academic and cultural exchange focused on information technology and artificial intelligence.
Academic and Cultural Exchange Details
The visiting American delegation included UVU Information Systems and Technology Study Abroad Program faculty members Dr. Carl Canlas and Professor Dave Loper, along with graduate students Tanner Heaton, Olivia Harrshorn, and Tyli Folks. The visit was initiated through a formal request from Dr. Canlas to MLUC Chancellor Dr. Alvin R. Malicdem, who endorsed the activity to the College of Information Technology.
During the campus visit, the two institutions held sessions focused on research projects, practices sharing, and a review of their respective curricula. UVU graduate students also attended ongoing local graduate school classes to experience the Philippine academic environment.
The exchange included specialized lectures delivered by UVU faculty to DMMMSU Doctor of Information Technology and UVU graduate students. Dr. Canlas presented on data privacy and artificial intelligence, while Professor Loper spoke regarding the integration of AI and cybersecurity into global business frameworks.
Broad Philippine AI Initiatives
The visit to DMMMSU-MLUC is part of a broader effort by Utah Valley University to partner with key institutions across the Philippines to advance AI education, research, and professional development. In collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), UVU plans to conduct a national AI and technology needs assessment and provide specialized training in AI risk management.
University and Outreach Partnerships
UVU's initiatives include outreach projects at the Education Center for AI Research (E-CAIR) and St. Leonard Academy to equip high school students with practical AI knowledge. At the university level, UVU is establishing research partnerships with Far Eastern University and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, focusing on global ethical perspectives in Information Systems and IT.
Ongoing Collaborative Projects
Previous collaborative efforts between UVU and De La Salle University - College of Saint Benilde included an online panel discussion on applied AI held in October 2025, as well as a session in December 2025 showcasing AI-driven student research projects. Additionally, UVU is working with the non-profit organization Tahanan Walang Hagdan (TWHI) on an AI and cybersecurity initiative designed to protect the organization from fraudulent donation websites.
Industry and Professional Engagement
The university's efforts also involve exploring career and internship opportunities with leading Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies and professional organizations such as ISACA Manila and the Institute of Internal Auditors - Philippines.
