The Utah Hunt Planner serves as an interactive mapping tool designed to provide hunters with in-depth information regarding all hunting units in Utah. The platform is intended to assist users in deciding which hunts to apply for and helping them prepare for upcoming hunts through various data layers and biologist updates.
Search and filtering features
Users can begin searching by selecting a hunt number, hunt name, species, or sex. The tool also allows for optional filtering by hunt type and weapon type. Once a search is conducted, users can click on unit boundary outlines to view tables of hunts for that specific unit. These entries contain information written by regional biologists, which can be printed, shared, or downloaded as a KML file.
For those who prefer a list format over a map interface, the tool provides a table view option.
Map layers and additional information
The platform includes several map data layers that can be added to provide additional context. These layers include information on antlerless elk-control areas, CWMU areas, wildlife management areas, and walk-in access areas. Hunters can also view species habitat layers, land ownership boundaries, and the locations of medical facilities including hospitals and urgent care centers.
Land ownership and legal responsibilities
When using the land ownership layer, the tool notes that mapped property boundaries may not reflect actual legal holdings. Users are advised to respect all marked boundaries and signs on properties and are responsible for determining if an area is private property.
Permissions and technical support
The Utah Hunt Planner includes a reminder that National Forests may contain areas of private land, and hunters should obtain written permission from landowners before hunting on private property. If users encounter technical issues with the tool, they can report bugs via email to dwrmaps@utah.gov.
