San Juan School District has announced its goals for the 2026-27 school year, highlighting a transition from strategic vision to practice. The district is implementing its UNITE to EMPOWER guiding principle to support student achievement and community engagement through 2030.
According to a notice from the district, the strategic plan was shaped by insights from nearly 600 students, parents, staff members, and neighbors. This community input was gathered through ten focus groups and six community feedback cycles.
The district's theme for the year is Listen to Learn. This initiative focuses on providing regular opportunities for community members to share thoughts and aims to improve district responsiveness to concerns.
Several facility updates are underway across San Juan County. Students in Blanding are starting the year in a new elementary school building. Safety enhancements, including new secure entryways, are being implemented at Montezuma Creek Elementary, San Juan High School, Albert R. Lyman Middle School, and Monticello High School.
Additional projects include landscaping updates at Whitehorse High School and the scheduled opening of a new Teen Center at Monument Valley High School later this year.
Superintendent Dr. Christine Fitzgerald stated that the district is honored to serve the Navajo Nation, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, and the local ranching, mining, and pioneer communities.
