Taylorsville police officers fatally shot 23-year-old Tyler Wilson during a burglary and stabbing investigation at the Callaway Apartments on Aug. 16, 2026. The shooting occurred after a tenant reported being stabbed while officers were responding to a reported break-in at the complex near 1200 W. Clubhouse Drive.
Shooting During Burglary Response
The incident began when dispatch received a call at approximately 10:24 p.m. regarding a possible burglary at the Callaway Apartments. While officers were en route to the scene, the caller reported that they had been stabbed by a suspect, according to Lt. Aaron Cheshire of the Taylorsville Police Department.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered a male outside the apartment who was armed with a knife. Two Taylorsville police officers discharged their firearms, striking the man. The suspect, identified by Taylorsville police as 23-year-old Tyler Wilson, was pronounced deceased at the scene despite lifesaving measures attempted by officers and medical personnel.
Stabbing Victim Condition
The victim of the stabbing, a 32-year-old man, was inside the apartment at the time of the incident. He was transported to a hospital with multiple stab wounds. While the victim was initially reported to be in critical condition, Taylorsville police later updated that he is currently listed as medically stable with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigation and Protocol
Following the shooting, the Taylorsville Police Department invoked the Officer-Involved Critical Incident protocol. The investigation into the incident is being led independently by OICI Protocol Team 1, which is headed by the Salt Lake City Police Department.
As is customary during officer-involved incidents, the two Taylorsville police officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
