A resident of Utah is among those on board the MV Hondius after the cruise ship experienced an outbreak of hantavirus while traveling through the Atlantic Ocean.
The Utah Department of Health and Human Services notified the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that at least one person from Utah is currently on the vessel.
The Utah Department of Health and Human Services stated it will work closely with any passengers from Utah to ensure their safe return home. Officials emphasized that the situation does not increase the risk of hantavirus for the general population in Utah.
It remains unknown if the Utah passenger had contact with anyone who was sick while aboard the ship.
Seventeen passengers remain on the ship and are expected to disembark in the Canary Islands within a few days. Following disembarkation, they will be escorted by federal officials to the National Quarantine Unit in Nebraska.
