Students attending the Specialty Prom at Lehi High School will experience a brighter atmosphere thanks to custom LED display lights created by the Alpine School District facilities team. While the team typically focuses on school repairs and construction, they dedicated extra time to build lighted letters for the event.
Goal of the decoration project
The project aimed to provide a professional and memorable environment for students from across the district attending the prom.
Collaborative construction process and design
The decoration project was a collaborative effort involving painters, carpenters, and electricians. The team designed the pieces to be durable and visually striking to match the enchanted forest theme of the event.
Features of the finished letters
According to Lee Clark, a carpenter from the facilities department, the team wanted to ensure students received the best experience possible. The finished letters are made of wood, stand approximately five and a half feet tall, and feature reflective paints along with color-changing LED lights.
Tradesman Bryce Pedersen noted that he enjoys working with other trades in physical facilities to do something fun for students that can be used for a long time.
Impact on special needs students
The Specialty Prom brings together approximately 200 students from ATEC, ATEC-West, Dan Peterson School, and Horizon. These schools serve students with special needs ranging from preschool through post-high school transitions.
Celebrating student achievements and milestones
Ryan Hemming, principal of Dan Peterson School, stated that the prom is an opportunity for every student to feel celebrated regardless of their challenges. Jeremy Parker, who works with the facilities team, said it is rewarding to see the team's skills used to bring light to such a special event.
Alpine School District board member Stacy Bateman added that the letters are beautiful and provide a professional touch to the night.
The responsibility for hosting the Specialty Prom rotates annually among participating schools. This year's enchanted forest theme is designed to create a welcoming environment where students can participate in traditional high school milestones and practice social skills.
