The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City issued a severe thunderstorm warning for south central Box Elder County and northeastern Tooele County on August 22. The warning was active from 5:45 PM MDT until 6:30 PM MDT.
At 5:44 PM MDT on August 22, radar indicated severe thunderstorms located along a line extending from seven miles southeast of the Utah Test and Training Range North to six miles northeast of Clive. The storms were moving northeast at 20 mph.
Hazards associated with the storms included 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail. Expected impacts included damage to vehicles from hail, as well as wind damage to trees, siding, and roofs.
Impacted locations included Lakeside, Hat Island, Great Salt Lake South of the Causeway, Delle, Utah Test and Training Range North, and Interstate 80 between mile markers 51 and 70.
Officials advised individuals to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building for protection. Those on or near the Great Salt Lake were advised to move indoors or inside a vehicle and to stay away from the water.
