Real Salt Lake fell to Liga MX side Tigres UANL in a penalty shootout on Tuesday, Aug. 4, following a 1-1 draw in the opening match of the 2026 Leagues Cup at America First Field. The defeat in the shootout, which went to sudden death, left the Utah-based club with a single point in the tournament's Phase One standings.
Ruiz Breaks Scoring Drought
The match featured a significant milestone for midfielder Pablo Ruiz, who scored his first goal for the club in 35 games, dating back to June 2023. Ruiz, making his first start of the 2026 season, leveled the score in the 16th minute with a left-footed shot from the top of the penalty area after a deflected attempt by Morgan Guilavogui returned to his feet. Ruiz's return to the scoresheet follows a period of recovery from two major knee injuries, including a meniscus tear in August 2023 and an ACL tear in March 2024.
Tigres Strike Early
Tigres UANL opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Juan Brunetta converted a left-footed shot from the center of the box, following an assist from Rodrigo Aguirre. Despite Real Salt Lake's aggressive early pressure, including a shot from newcomer Saba Lobjanidze that was saved by the Tigres goalkeeper, the match remained deadlocked through 90 minutes of regulation. RSL recorded 15 total shots, with six on target, but struggled to capitalize on their opportunities to take the lead.

On Real Salt Lake's sixth attempt, Eden, Utah native Zach Booth hit his shot off the post, allowing Tigres to convert their ensuing penalty and secure the extra point in the Leagues Cup standings. The result moved Real Salt Lake to a 6-6-6 all-time record against Liga MX visitors on Utah soil.
RSL Personnel Changes
Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni utilized eight personnel changes for the Tuesday night matchup following a 1-1 draw in St. Louis on Saturday, Aug. 1. The lineup included several players making significant appearances, including Georgian international Saba Lobjanidze and Colombian defender Juan Jose Arias, both of whom earned their first starts for the club. Arias recorded eight defensive contributions during his 90 minutes of play, including a critical sliding challenge in the box.

The match also showcased the performance of goalkeeper Rafael Cabral, who made several critical saves to keep the match tied, including a stop in the 81st minute against Francisco Reyes and another in the 92nd minute against Isaías Galván. Cabral's performance marked his 58th consecutive start for the club. In contrast, Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán and the Tigres defense managed to withstand RSL's second-half pressure, which included attempts from Victor Olatunji and JuanMa Sanabria.

The club's next Leagues Cup match is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 8, against Mexican newcomers Atlante FC at America First Field.
