The Salt Lake City Police Department has released body-worn camera footage from an April 2, 2026, incident involving an officer-involved critical incident. The release follows compliance with Salt Lake City ordinance 2.10.200.
Detectives had been investigating 37-year-old Lawrence Vigil for drug distribution and firearm possession prior to a judge granting a search warrant for his person and his apartment.
At approximately 12:18 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026, members of the SLCPD SWAT Team arrived to serve the search warrant at an apartment located at 49 South 800 East. Officers surrounded the building and made multiple loud announcements identifying themselves as police.
During the breach of the apartment door, Vigil attempted to jump from a third-floor window before returning inside. Shortly after, Vigil pushed the window screen out while holding an object that resembled a handgun. A SWAT officer monitoring the window shot at and struck Vigil. Following the shot, Vigil dropped an object and retreated into the apartment.
Officers inside the building provided aid to Vigil, who was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. After being released from medical care, Vigil was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.
Vigil faces charges in Third District Court including one count of assault on a peace officer with a dangerous weapon, one count of obstruction of justice, and one count of possession of a weapon by a restricted person. Additionally, a grand jury in the United States District Court for the District of Utah indicted Vigil for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave according to department policy.
