The West Jordan City Council passed Ordinance No. 26-52 to amend Title 6, Chapter 3B, Section 5 of the West Jordan City Code. The amendment establishes new protocols regarding the revocation of dog licenses to promote responsible ownership and address community safety.
Under the new ordinance, a dog license may be revoked for a period of one year for several lawful reasons. These include an animal control officer finding a dog at large on three or more occasions during any 12-month period, any act of animal cruelty, the falsification of information in a license application, or an unprovoked attack by an at-large dog involving serious bodily injury.
If an administrative law judge issues an order following a notice of violation, the Animal Control Division may be directed to pick up and impound the dog. Owners of impounded dogs will be subject to fines and penalties established in the chapter for impounded animals. Furthermore, any person whose dog is subject to an impound and revocation order will forfeit the dog and will not be allowed to redeem it under any circumstances.
The City Council adopted the amendment to enable law enforcement to address situations that endanger the health and safety of the community. In passing the ordinance, the Council stated it was in the best interest of the public health, safety, and welfare of West Jordan residents. The ordinance was passed by the City Council on October 27, 2026, and was signed by Mayor Dirk Burton on October 30, 2026.
The ordinance became effective immediately following its signing and publication. A summary of the ordinance was published on the Utah Public Notice Website on November 2, 2026.
