The American Red Cross has declared a national blood crisis following a significant decline in donations. Blood donations nationwide have fallen to a four-year summer low.
In Salt Lake City, the shortage presents a risk to patient care if more people do not donate.
While all blood types are currently needed, the situation is particularly critical for type O positive blood. The organization reports that there is now less than a one-day supply of this specific type available.
Officials noted that patient care remains at risk unless there is an increase in donations.
