A counselor's office can have an open door. Kory Sekaquaptewa made a habit of walking out of his and meeting with students in the halls.
Last spring, Shoreline Middle School student Emmy Chappell nominated her school counselor and Hope Squad advisor for the Provo Way Award. Emmy's nomination focused on something students understand immediately: whether an adult feels easy to approach.
“Mr. S is so welcoming,” she wrote. “He can make anyone feel better and is so easy to talk to.”
Then she gave an example. During lunch, Kory went around to the tables to talk with students. Emmy said it was “always so fun to see him.”
Emmy wrote that he knew his students well and made it a priority to talk with them and help whenever he could. It's clear that Kory builds relationships before any harder conversations. He's working steps ahead to make students feel safe and comfortable.
