A natural gas line puncture near 24 West Main Street forced a multi-block evacuation of downtown Lehi on Friday afternoon. Enbridge Gas Utah, the utility operator, ordered a mandatory evacuation for all properties within two blocks of the intersection near South Center and West Main.
Lehi Fire Department crews responded to the scene around noon. The evacuation included the city-run Legacy Center at 123 North Center Street and its south parking lot, which was ordered closed through Saturday. No injuries were reported during the incident.
City communications staff told the Lehi Free Press that police requested everyone remain outside the perimeter and follow instructions from first responders. As of Friday evening, there was no estimated time provided for when the leak would be resolved.
This event follows a similar incident on November 4, 2025, when a contractor struck a gas line near Traverse Mountain Elementary School. In that instance, Lehi spokesperson Jeanie Livingston stated that the school and everyone within a quarter-mile radius were evacuated as a precaution. No injuries occurred during that November strike either.
It remains unconfirmed whether Friday's puncture was caused by third-party excavation.
Enbridge Gas Utah, which replaced Dominion Energy in Utah, manages the distribution system. The utility's safety record has recently faced federal scrutiny following a 2024 explosion in South Jordan that killed 15-year-old Logan Hansen. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) attributed that fatality to a crack in an aging Aldyl A polyethylene distribution main.
Under Utah's Damage to Underground Utility Facilities Act, diggers are required to use Blue Stakes of Utah 811 to request locates before excavating. Failure to follow dig-safety laws can result in civil penalties of up to $5,000 per violation and a maximum of $100,000 per excavation.
As of Friday evening, officials had not announced when residents and businesses within the two-block evacuation zone could return to their properties. It is also unclear if a formal damage investigation will be opened regarding the Main Street puncture.
