The City of St. George announced that an open house for the new Fire Station 1 will be held Thursday, Nov. 7, to showcase the 23,000-square-foot facility built on the former site of the Flood Street Chapel.
Consolidating fire department operations
The new station consolidates operations from both Station 1 and Station 2 on North Main into a single location. According to St. George Fire Chief Robert Stoker, the facility is designed to accommodate growing administrative staff and multiple crews while improving response times by avoiding traffic congestion previously experienced on 1000 East.
Historical significance of the site
The property holds historical significance as the former location of the Flood Street Chapel, which was dedicated around 1955 and served as a community center for decades. The City of St. George purchased the property for $1.1 million after structural issues forced the chapel's closure in 2021.
New facility features and standards
The new building features expanded living quarters for firefighters, including private bedrooms and a spacious kitchen, as well as a heritage display honoring the department's antique fire apparatus. Stoker noted that the station was built to meet strict Insurance Services Office and National Fire Protection Association standards.
Pacificorp power sale application filed
In separate regulatory news, Pacificorp, doing business as Rocky Mountain Power, has filed an application regarding the sale of its Washington service area. The filing, identified as Case No. PAC-E-26-04, seeks approval for the sale and a corresponding accounting order.
