A 35-year-old man died Saturday night after his vehicle overturned and became submerged in a retention pond following a high-speed crash on I-80, prompting Utah Highway Patrol to issue warnings regarding summer driving safety.
Details of the high-speed crash
The crash occurred around 7 p.m. on May 23, 2026, at the exit 99 off-ramp where I-80 meets State Road 36, according to reports received by the Utah Highway Patrol. Lt. Cameron Roden stated the vehicle was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control, drove off the left side of the road, and overturned into the pond.
Rescue efforts and driver's death
Bystanders were able to pull the driver from the submerged vehicle before he was transported to a hospital via helicopter, but he was pronounced dead later that evening, according to Roden. While the crash caused substantial damage to the vehicle, officials noted the accident did not significantly impact traffic because the car ended up off the roadway.

Jon Smith, a spokesman for North Tooele Fire District, said he participated in the emergency response and entered the water to search for trapped occupants. Smith noted that first responders frequently deal with crashes along the 100-mile stretch of I-80 between Lake Point and the Nevada state line, estimating that over 80% of his district's call volume over the next three months will occur on that interstate.
