A coalition of 25 national and regional LGBT advocacy groups urged the Big 12 conference to reject the admission of Brigham Young University as a new member. The letter, sent by Athlete Ally and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, claimed that BYU maintains discriminatory policies against LGBT students and staff.
In the letter addressed to commissioner Bob Bowlsby, the authors stated that BYU provides no protections for LGBT students and argued that the institution should not be rewarded with membership due to its policies. The letter was co-signed by groups including GLAAD and the National Organization for Women (NOW).
BYU students and faculty are required to follow a school Honor Code that includes a section addressing homosexual behavior. While same-gender attraction is not a violation, the code states that taking part in a same-sex relationship is inappropriate and violates the code. Under these rules, an openly gay individual cannot serve as a BYU coach or athlete unless they practice chastity. Students found in violation of the Honor Code may face suspension or dismissal.
Ashland Johnson, the director of policy and campaigns for Athlete Ally, stated that BYU's policies go against the values of the Big 12. Johnson noted that the conference's member schools are progressive and warned that admitting BYU would leave LGBT student-athletes, coaches, and fans without protections when traveling to the school.
In a statement, BYU spokesperson Carri Jenkins said the university welcomes all community members whose conduct meets university standards. Jenkins stated the school is clear about its honor code and noted that a person's stated sexual orientation is not an issue. She also noted that Utah state law recognizes religious liberty for faith-based institutions like BYU.
The push for expansion comes as the Big 12 explores adding 12 or 14 teams. While BYU has expressed interest, speculation has remained regarding its potential status as a football-only member due to its policy of not participating in athletic contests on Sundays. A Big 12 spokesperson stated that the conference's Policy on Diversity, which requires member institutions to refrain from prohibited discrimination, applies to LGBT members.
