His new place near Strawberry, deep in the Avintaquin Canyon, was beautiful and peaceful. Maybe too peaceful. Black bears have been showing up in Utah cities in numbers never seen before. As of Aug. 25, DWR biologists and partner law enforcement agencies had responded 168 times to issues involving bears, compared with 83 responses during all of 2025.
