The National Weather Service Salt Lake City issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Salt Lake, central Davis, and northwestern Utah counties. The warning was in effect until 11:15 AM MDT on August 29, 2026.
According to the National Weather Service, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Syracuse to near Magna and near Eagle Mountain. The storm line was moving northeast at 45 mph. Hazards associated with the storms included 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-sized hail. The National Weather Service noted that hail damage to vehicles was expected, and wind damage to trees, siding, and roofs was possible.
Impacted locations included Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Provo, Sandy, Layton, Murray, Farmington, Hill Air Force Base, West Jordan, Orem, Taylorsville, South Jordan, Lehi, Draper, Riverton, Roy, Pleasant Grove, Cottonwood Heights, Clearfield, and Midvale. Affected highways included Interstate 15 between mile markers 263 and 313 and between mile markers 325 and 337, Interstate 84 between mile markers 85 and 89, and Interstate 80 in Utah between mile markers 106 and 125.
In a separate update, the National Weather Service cancelled a severe thunderstorm warning for east central Tooele County because the storms had moved out of the warned area.
