Salt Lake City's 9-Line corridor and the future Fleet Block open space are set to receive significant environmental upgrades following the acquisition of $11.5 million in grants. The funding, obtained through the Bezos Earth Fund’s Greening America’s Cities initiative, aims to increase greenery and cooling for residents using the urban trail and those living nearby.
In addition to climate resilience efforts, Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The legal action seeks to stop the conversion of a warehouse on the city's west side into an immigration detention facility, alleging the decision was made without following federal law.
Meanwhile, the Salt Lake City Department of Public Lands has begun closing sections of Donner Trail Park located at 2903 Kennedy Dr. Construction for improvements began on June 8, with plans to introduce new playgrounds and a memorial. The park is expected to fully reopen this fall.
The city also recently celebrated the completion of the 400 South Viaduct Trail bridge. This new protected bike route connects downtown and the Granary District to the extended 300 West path, representing the longest continuous public art in Utah to date.
