Aleena Bonesteel, 18, of South Jordan, faces seven charges following an alleged confrontation near Utah Valley University that involved threats of violence and criminal trespass, according to court documents reported by the Daily Herald on September 5.
Bonesteel was booked into the Utah County Jail on a Wednesday after UVU campus police located her on the university campus. She was released the next day by a 4th District Court judge under non-monetary conditions.
According to an affidavit, Bonesteel allegedly approached four men walking home from UVU and commented about shooting them, causing the group to flee out of fear for their safety. The affidavit also states that Bonesteel admitted to being violent while speaking with the group.
In a separate incident described in the affidavit, Bonesteel allegedly followed a female victim onto a flight of stairs, yelled at her, and attempted to convince the woman to take her to an apartment. The report states she allegedly took a picture of the victim's feet and cornered the woman before following her into a restricted-access building near the university.
Bonesteel allegedly resisted arrest when officers attempted to handcuff her, resulting in an interference with a peace officer charge.
During the encounter, Bonesteel told officers she had not slept or eaten for multiple days, was off her bipolar medications, and was high. She also attributed her behavior to the rap music she listens to and creates, leading the affidavit to note her state of mind appeared to indicate a mental episode.
Bonesteel faces four counts of threat of violence, a Class A misdemeanor criminal trespass charge, one count of interference with a peace officer, and a disorderly conduct infraction. A judge ordered her release subject to conditions including appearing for all future court proceedings and not committing new criminal offenses.
Under Utah Code, the criminal trespass charge is the most serious facing her, carrying a maximum penalty of 364 days in jail and fines up to $2,500.
