The Utah Department of Transportation announced Friday that several major traffic disruptions are occurring as part of a large-scale construction and rehabilitation project on I-215 West. The ongoing work, which stretches from SR-201 to North Temple, includes the long-term closure of the westbound I-80 ramp to southbound I-215, a closure expected to remain in effect until mid-August.
Major Ramp and Lane Closures
The massive infrastructure initiative aims to reconstruct and resurface roadways while rehabilitating 30 bridges across the corridor. According to UDOT, the project also includes pavement reconstruction on 14 miles of ramps located on I-80 and California Avenue, as well as the creation of a new southbound auxiliary lane extending from 700 North to westbound I-80.
Interchange Disruptions
Commuters should prepare for significant disruptions at the I-215 and I-80 interchange. UDOT stated that 11 bridges in this specific area require improvements, necessitating intermittent ramp closures through August 2026 to ensure a safe construction zone.
In addition to the westbound I-80 to southbound I-215 ramp closure, the westbound I-80 to northbound I-215 ramp is currently closed and is scheduled to remain so through July 20.
Upcoming July Restrictions
Looking ahead to late July, several new restrictions are scheduled to begin. As early as Tuesday, July 28, three major ramps will close for approximately 30 days. These include the northbound I-215 to westbound I-80 ramp, the northbound I-215 to eastbound I-80 ramp, and the northbound I-215 to Redwood Road ramp.
Furthermore, UDOT noted that North Temple will face a full closure from Redwood Road to 2200 West. This closure is scheduled to begin as early as Friday, July 17 at 8 p.m. and continue through the early morning hours of Monday, July 20 to facilitate bridge construction.
I-80 and Local Impacts
Drivers using I-80 should also expect nightly lane restrictions. These eastbound and westbound I-80 lane restrictions are expected to occur each night from 9 p.m. through the early morning hours and will continue throughout the upcoming week.
Additionally, a long-term closure is in enough for the ramp from Redwood Road to northbound I-215, which is expected to remain closed through July 2027.
Local Street Disruptions
The project has already resulted in a significant shift of traffic patterns. All traffic has been moved to newly reconstructed pavement on the west side of I-215 as construction enters its next phase.
Local street traffic will also face intermittent restrictions due to ongoing bridge rehabilitation projects over several key intersections. Drivers should expect lane shifts and traffic restrictions at 500 South, Indiana Avenue, and 1700 South. Additionally, motorists using California Avenue should anticipate intermittent turning movement restrictions and lane shifts.
Driver Expectations
The construction environment is expected to present several challenges for passing motorists, including reduced speeds, noise, dust, and vibrations. UDOT warned that heavy equipment, support vehicles, and crew members will be active in the area.
Because construction schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions and material availability, UDOT advises travelers to allow extra time or consider alternate routes during these periods of activity.

The rehabilitation project, which originally began in July 2025, is slated to continue through the summer of 2027.
