BYU Athletics announced Wednesday an expanded corporate sponsorship agreement with Trucordia that will feature the company's logo on the bumpers of BYU football helmets. The announcement follows a similar branding move by the University of Utah, which began a multi-year equipment sponsorship with ALKEME Insurance on Sept. 1, 2026.
BYU Expands Branding
The new agreement between BYU Athletics and Trucordia is a multiyear deal, according to a post by BYU Football on X on Nov. 5, 2026. The branding will appear on the back bumpers of the football team's helmets.
Utah Precedent
The move by BYU follows a precedent set by the University of Utah, which announced a multi-year partnership on Sept. 1, 2026, that made ALKEME Insurance the equipment sponsor for the Utah football program. That deal, which was the first helmet-specific corporate branding deal in NCAA history, includes the ALKEME name on the bumpers of the back of Utah football players' helmets. The University of Utah also stated that the sponsorship extends to other Utah teams that wear helmets.
NCAA Rule Changes
The emergence of helmet sponsorships is part of a broader shift in college athletics following NCAA rule changes. The NCAA officially approved commercial jersey patch sponsorships on Jan. 23, with those rules taking effect Aug. 1. Additionally, the NCAA had approved on-field commercial sponsorships for regular-season football games two years prior to the 2026 season.
Industry Trends
Industry analysts view helmet logos as complementary to more valuable assets like jersey patches. While jersey patches often command a higher premium due to greater exposure, helmet marks offer a novel way for brands to integrate into the game-day environment. For example, the ALKEME deal with Utah included an internship program with the University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business, which launched a 'Company in Residence' partnership to connect business education with professional practice.
Market Evolution
The expansion of branding opportunities has led multimedia rights holders to move aggressively across the market. While many schools are prioritizing jersey patches, companies are increasingly looking at helmets as a highly visible way to enter new regions or stand out in a crowded sponsorship landscape.
