A strong thunderstorm was tracked by Doppler radar on August 24, moving northeast at 20 mph, according to the National Weather Service Salt Lake City. The storm was located 8 miles north of Coalville and was expected to impact portions of southeastern Rich, east central Morgan, northwestern Summit, and western Uinta Counties.
The storm was associated with hazards including half inch hail and wind gusts between 50 and 55 mph. Impacted areas included Henefer, Wahsatch, Emory, Croydon, Castle Rock, and Echo. The storm also affected Interstate 84 between mile markers 112 and 119, and Interstate 80 in Utah between mile markers 167 and 196.
Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects, which may cause minor damage to outdoor objects. Additionally, frequent cloud to ground lightning was occurring with the storm. Officials noted that lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm.
The National Weather Service advised that if outdoors, individuals should consider seeking shelter inside a building or a vehicle. Because the storm could intensify, people were advised to monitor local radio and television stations for additional information or possible warnings.
