The Utah Mammoth kicked off their third training camp with increased momentum following the franchise's first playoff appearance. According to a September 21 report, the team is aiming for a deeper postseason run this year, supported by an intact young core and recent roster improvements.
Mammoth captain Clayton Keller stated that the team has improved each year and holds higher expectations for the group this season. The team's talent foundation was established while the franchise was still located in Arizona. General manager Bill Armstrong rebuilt the roster by acquiring numerous draft picks used on talented young players who developed within the system.
Following the franchise's second season since moving to Utah, the Mammoth achieved a playoff run last year. The roster remains largely intact after the team matched a New Jersey offer sheet to sign restricted free agent Barrett Hayton to a $4.775 million contract. The core group also includes players such as Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther.
The Mammoth have bolstered their roster with veteran acquisitions, including the trade for two-way center Vincent Trocheck from the New York Rangers. Additionally, the team signed former Islanders captain Anders Lee to a three-year, $16.2 million contract.
Leadership remains stable following the offseason signing of coach André Tourigny to a multiyear contract. Two-time Stanley Cup champion Adam Foote has also joined the coaching staff. Goalie Karel Vejmelka expressed confidence in the roster, stating the team is ready to strive for a run to the Stanley Cup final.
The Mammoth's strategy of building for sustained success mirrors historical examples like the Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, and Tampa Bay Lightning, all of which achieved championship success following rebuilding periods. Defenseman MacKenzie Weegar noted that while last year was a great year, the team's internal expectation is to exceed their previous postseason performance.
